Musical Pedagogy

Period of study: 1 academic year (two semesters), full time.

Students holding a Bachelor's degree in Musical Pedagogy or in Musical Art can apply. Their average score should be above Good (4) from the semester exams and Very good (4.50) from the State exams.

A total of 60 credits is required. They are accumulated from the compulsory (70%), elective (20%) and optional (10%) subjects.

Courses of study:

Compulsory: Styles in the history of European and Bulgarian music; Bulgarian folk music and modern times; Harmony and arranging; Musical aesthetics; Developmental psychology of music; Contemporary methods of teaching music; Praxis in music teaching with an instructor

Elective: Piano; Conducting a choir from a piano score; Composition; Stage music interpretation; Music therapy

Optional: Foreign language; Sports

Professional qualifications and career opportunities:

- To train music students; to manage the organization and functioning of musical life; to do research work in the field of music pedagogy and methods of teaching music-theoretical subjects; to teach at and direct music schools; to manage various creative music formations;

- To teach the following subjects: singing and music at secondary comprehensive schools and all secondary public and private schools in Bulgaria; solfeggio, elementary theory of music, harmony, polyphony, musical analysis, score reading, history of music, musical literature, study of musical instruments, orchestration, Bulgarian folk music, musical aesthetics, methods of teaching methods of teaching music-theoretical subjects at secondary schools of music;

- To conduct school choirs and orchestras; to manage and teach at all kinds of music schools and preschools; to conduct amateur music ensembles.

As music teachers the graduates can work in all kinds of education institutions in which music is taught, community center, editorial offices, etc, taking positions as teacher, lecturer, editor, or conductor of amateur musical ensembles.
