STRING INSTRUMENTS DEPARTMENT Head of Department:

When the Music Academy was established in 1921, the Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass majors existed as a common department – String Instruments. At the beginning of the 1950s the Violin Department was separated from the String Instruments Department and at the beginning of the 1960s the Harp major was incorporated into the String Instruments Department.
The aim of the newly-founded department was to achieve the best possible training of the young specialists – soloists, chamber performers, pedagogues and orchestra members.

Distinguished Bulgarian instrumentalists have taught at the department.

In the Viola major:
* Kosta Kirov formed the first viola class in 1938;
* Prof. Stefan Sugarev – the first Head of the String Instruments Department, a zealous proponent of the art of viola in our country – taught and trained a large number of instrumentalists and pedagogues;
* Prof. Alexander Neynski – President of the Bulgarian State Conservatory in the period 1968-1971 and 1985-1987;
* Lecturers Zahari Chavdarov, Petar Stefanov and Dimitar Bozduganov, Assoc. Prof. Emil Abadzhiev, Prof. Stefan Magnev, Prof. Dimitar Chilikov, Prof. Ognyan Stanchev, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Stoyanov.

In the Violoncello major:
* Prof. Ivan Tsibulka – the first pedagogue and founder of the violoncello class in the newly-established Academy; he also taught double bass;
* some of the pupils of Prof. Ivan Tsibulka are: Prof. Konstantin Popov, Prof. Konstantin Kugiyski, Prof. Velko Karastoyanov, Kiril Vapurdzhiev.
Lecturers who taught later were Prof. Zdravko Yordanov, Assoc.  Prof. Svetoslav Manolov, Prof. Bogomil Karakonov.

In the Double Bass major:

From 1944 to 1952 the classes were given by Tsanko Trifonov – a leading musician of the double bass section in Sofia Opera, and Assen Vapurdzhiev.
Since 1952 classes have been given by Prof. Todor Toshev, Prof. Nikolay Nikolov, Prof. Georgi Velkov.

In the Harp major:

Assen Arnaudov was the first harp lecturer until 1961. After him the class was led by Prof. Malina Hristova until 2006.

Contributors of long-standing and valuable service to the department were the rehearsal pianists Elena Vezneva, Ani Toshkova, Krastyo Kavlakov, Violina Stoyanova, etc.

Training in the department is carried out in conformity with the world standards for simultaneous training and formation of instrumentalists for the degrees of Bachelor, Master and Doctor.

The syllabus covers all music styles and periods – baroque, classics, romanticism, impressionism, 20th and 21st century music. Special attention is paid to the work of Bulgarian composers.
